Liter of Light

Started: 2011, completed: 2012.

A Liter of Light Switzerland is a project which aims to provide an ecologically and economically sustainable source of light to underprivileged households that do not have access to electricity or simply cannot afford electricity. The source of light consists of a plastic bottle filled with a water & bleach solution which is embedded in the roofs of houses. The solar bottle harnesses the light from the sun, capturing and diffracting the light to all parts of the room. This source of light is not only environmentally friendly but also easy to install and requires only simple technology and accessible materials. The impact of installing these solar bulbs goes beyond providing light. It will lead to a better quality of life for the families, create new working opportunities and will reduce the carbon dioxide footprint.

The invention of the Solar Bottle Bulb was developed by students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has already been implemented in multiple countries. Our approach is to support existing Liter of Light organizations (e.g. in Columbia) and expand Liter of Light into new countries through partnering with local NGOs, eventually building up a global network together with independently existing Liter of Light organizations (e.g. Philippines).
