Started: 2009, still ongoing.

P.I.E.C.E.S is a student-driven social initiative focusing on children’s education and personal growth in developing countries. It was founded in 2009 by SIM students of the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and today it is an established club at HSG with projects in Nicaragua, Indonesia, China, and Peru. P.I.E.C.E.S encourages volunteering instead of commercializing it. It is important to us that we foster growth in children, but also in our volunteers. We support them in every way possible to guarantee a successful experience for everybody involved.

2012 – Peru

P.I.E.C.E.S Peru was founded by a team of dynamic students dedicated to exchanging knowledge, sharing experiences and inspiring youths from Lima, Peru. The team’s four members, hailing from diverse backgrounds (Germany, Spain, Switzerland and USA), united to support and mentor Peru’s next generation of leaders. In February 2013 they flew to Lima and started a three-week intense learning program based on English proficiency, intercultural exchange and social skills development. Sagrados Corazones, in Puente Piedra, provided the facilities and hosted the students from six different Lima schools. Moreover, the team successfully established an alumni network formed by students from Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae (UCSS), in Los Olivos district, to ensure the sustainability of the project and inspire the locals to get involved in social activities to help their own people.

Currently, P.I.E.C.E.S Peru is integrated in the P.I.E.C.E.S organization and is simultaneously an official project of the cultural department at UCSS in Lima. In August 2013, a new team of three members continued the mission during a four-week teaching program in our new partner school I.E.P Maria Montessori Stoppiani, situated in Collique (Comas, Lima), together with seven Peruvian students from the UCSS.

P.I.E.C.E.S Peru develops further day by day. A team of four students from the University of St.Gallen will fly to Lima in February 2014. At this point, we are proud to say that P.I.E.C.E.S Peru is a sustainable project taking place twice a year in Lima that has inspired the locals to collaborate and become part of this beautiful experience.

2011 – China

The P.I.E.C.E.S project “A Journey to China involves four passionate SIM students travelling to Yizhou, China, for four weeks in order to exchange their knowledge with the students at Yizhou Senior High School. This knowledge mostly surrounds the English language skills, cultural experiences, and business expertise. Moreover, the SIM team is composed of four different nationalities (Austrian, Canadian, German, and Lebanese) who will provide matched teaching methods along with creative ideas to spark interest in the students to further develop their language skills, reflect on different cultures, or go abroad later.

The ultimate aim of this project is to develop a long-lasting relationship between P.I.E.C.E.S., a student-run organization at the University of St. Gallen that recruits volunteers who would like to educate children abroad, and the Yizhou Senior High School. The SIM students hope that their success will lead to other student volunteers travelling to China in the future to teach English in conjunction with other useful skills at the Yizhou Senior High School. They hope that through their efforts, teaching methods, and development of course packages, a sustainable relationship will be built for future endeavors.
